Overview:
Gallery 1C03 is the campus art gallery for The University of Winnipeg. Our mission is to engage diverse communities through the development and presentation of contemporary and historical art exhibitions and related programming initiatives. The Gallery is also responsible for the development, preservation, and presentation of the University's art collection of nearly 1,200 works by Canadian creators. 
 
Job Description:
Gallery 1C03 seeks to hire a Collections Management and Curatorial Research Intern to carry out work in several areas.

Collections Management: Working under the supervision of Gallery 1C03’s Director/Curator, the Intern will conduct an inventory of a portion of the University art collection and carry out on-campus artwork loan requests. Through this process the intern will help the Director/Curator identify and prioritize selected pieces for conservation treatment as the University’s budget allows and facilitate the presentation of artworks on campus. The Intern will also accession new titles into the Gallery’s library database of contemporary and historical art publications, and participate in the distribution of the Gallery’s publications to other institutions to make them available to researchers.

Curatorial Research: The Intern will conduct research on selected artworks in the collection identified by the Director/Curator in preparation for a forthcoming exhibition.

Gallery Attendant /Education/Communication: The Intern will serve as an attendant for several afternoons during the presentation of a collection exhibition in the Gallery, welcoming visitors and providing information about the exhibition. S/he will also carry out art education programming/tours related to the exhibition upon request. Finally, the Intern may be asked to promote Gallery programming via social media.

This position offers the candidate the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on training and work experience in a professional environment. It is subject to approval of funding from Young Canada Works.


Qualifications:

Education: Upper level undergraduate or graduate Fine Arts, Art History, or Cultural Studies student intending to return to studies full time in the fall of 2014.
Experience: Experience working with collections and/or information management systems and databases would be considered an asset.
Computer Skills: Experience in use of word-processing applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with database programs such as Filemaker Pro and software such as Adobe Photoshop Light Room would be an asset.
Communication, Research, and Organizational Skills: The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong research skills, superior organizational skills, and possess a strong attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy, as well as the ability to set goals and work independently.
Physical Ability:  The candidate must be able to negotiate stairs and be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.

Patrick Mahon: Water Structures book launch at McNally




Gallery 1C03 is pleased to partner with McNally Robinson Booksellers to launch the publication Patrick Mahon - Water Structures: Printed Sculptural Works, 2012-2014. The launch will take place at the McNally Robinson Grant Park location in Winnipeg (1120 Grant Avenue) in their Atrium on Friday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. It will include a discussion about Mahon's work between the artist and Robert Enright.

Water Structures considers recent work produced by Mahon which was featured in three recent exhibitions at Gallery 1C03, Robert Langen Gallery, and McMaster Museum of Art. For more information about the book, the artist, and the contributors to the volume please visit Gallery 1C03's website.
