Rate of pay: $11.33 - $12.66 per hour plus 6% vacation pay, variable hours

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Opens/closes Gallery 1C03 (The University of Winnipeg’s campus art gallery)  at the beginning/end of the day by turning on/shutting off all Gallery lights; plugging in/unplugging, turning on/turning off, starting up/shutting down equipment; opening/closing doors; ensuring that Security Services unlock/lock doors and de-arm/re-arm the Gallery’s alarm system.
• Safety/security of Gallery 1C03 exhibits - ensures that artworks exhibited in Gallery 1C03 are not subject to theft or mishandling by the public during hours of operation.
• Public relations - greets visitors to Gallery 1C03 and answers any questions that visitors have about the art exhibits to the best of their ability; refers visitors to Gallery 1C03’s Director/Curator in situations where they are unable to provide assistance.
• Attendance record - maintains a count of the number of visitors to Gallery 1C03.
• Alerts Gallery 1C03 Director/Curator of any problems within the Gallery environment; these can relate to temperature, humidity and lighting issues or concerns for the safety of the artwork or visitors.
• When applicable, takes readings of environmental conditions in Gallery 1C03 using a hand-held environmental monitor or a data logger.
• When applicable, handles sales of art exhibition catalogues; this includes maintaining a count of funds in cash box and a count of catalogues at the beginning and end of each shift and returns all cash to Gallery 1C03 Director/Curator for processing.
• Performs other related duties as required or assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be a full-time student at a high school or The University of Winnipeg, preferably an art history/cultural studies major or related disciplines, or with an interest in the visual arts.
• Some knowledge of contemporary visual art would be an asset.
• On the job training provided.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions, procedures and regulations.
• May require the ability to maintain records and handle cash on occasion.
• Ability to communicate effectively with visitors who may be students, faculty, staff and the general public.
• Ability to work day, evening and/or weekend shifts.
• Capable of performing duties as assigned.

MY MONUMENT is a multimedia exhibition featuring artistic exchanges among artists cam bush, Steven Leyden Cochrane, Roewan Crowe, and Paul Robles using Crowe’s new book Quivering Land as a point of connection to explore monuments and vanished feminist/queer/alternative cultural sites. The double-sited exhibit will be shown in Gallery 1C03 (1st floor, Centennial Hall) and in the Hamilton Galleria (4th floor mezzanine, Centennial Hall in the Library), both at The University of Winnipeg.

Quivering Land is a queerish Western long poem that engages with politics to reckon with the legacies of violence and colonization in the West. Robles creates intricately cut origami paper images in response to this narrative, while Crowe produces text-based works that have been altered irrevocably by the brutality of the gun. Together the artists fashion a collaborative sculpture which further elucidates shared experiences of loss and the desire to create space for reflection and memory.

MY MONUMENT includes the participatory website Ghost Launch which maps vanished feminist/queer/alternative bookstores and solicits stories, images, and experiences of these bookstores through a public call for submissions. Evidence of this interactive and intergenerational shared space will take the form of multimedia installations by Steven Leyden Cochrane in Gallery 1C03 and by cam bush in the Hamilton Galleria. All four MY MONUMENT artists will join with Chandra Mayor in front of the former site of Bold Print – The Women’s Bookstore on 478 River Avenue on March 15 in an event titled Ghost Launch to reanimate that location with public readings and the launch of a chapbook. Similarly, for The Book is Happening, Crowe will deliver a durational public reading of Quivering Land in the queer space of Gallery 1C03 on March 20.


Artist biographies:

cam bush is a (re)emerging, Winnipeg-based intermedia artist who holds a BFA (Hons.) from the University of Manitoba. His work frequently investigates locality, human relationships, and language and communication, and has been exhibited in galleries, festivals and alternative exhibition spaces across Canada.

Steven Leyden Cochrane is a multi-disciplinary artist, writer, and educator. He holds a BFA in painting from the Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA in studio art from the University of Windsor. Originally from Tampa, Florida, he is currently based in Winnipeg.

Roewan Crowe is a trans-disciplinary artist, theorist, and teacher living in Winnipeg who explores the rich terrain of video, photography, installation, performance, digital and new media technologies, theory, text, and activism. She investigates the transformational possibilities that open up through artistic and pedagogical practices. She has a particular passion for queer/trans/feminist art, creating community, and facilitating initiatives in cultural democracy.

Born in the Philippines, Paul Robles is a Canadian artist based in Winnipeg. Recognized for his intricate origami cut paper works, Robles combines the delicacy associated with fine and traditional handwork with the portrayal of subjects such as violence, loneliness and intimacy. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (Gold Medal) from University of Manitoba School of Art and Bachelor of Arts degree (Sociology) from The University of Winnipeg.

Chandra Mayor is the current Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence at The University of Winnipeg. The author of three books of poetry and fiction, she has received numerous awards for her writing, including a Lambda Literary Award. She has performed her work in venues and festivals across the country.

Ghost Launch: Call for Submissions

The past twenty years have seen the near-complete disappearance of feminist- and queer-oriented bookstores in Canada, echoing the broader decline of independent, brick-and-mortar booksellers across North America. Ghost Launch is an online project that seeks to remember and reanimate these once-vital nexuses of community and culture.

Produced in conjunction with MY MONUMENT, the forthcoming exhibition at The University of Winnipeg’s Gallery 1C03 by cam bush, Steven Leyden Cochrane, Roewan Crowe, and Paul Robles, Ghost Launch is conceived of as an unstructured archive and “living monument.” The website will serve as a space to remember and reflect on vanished bookstores and as a platform for the virtual “launch” of works that continue to be made in their absence.

Ghost Launch is currently seeking submissions of personal accounts, historical ephemera, writing, and art that record, remember, or respond to feminist and queer bookstores that no longer exist.

Submissions may include (but are not restricted to) the following:

• Written and oral histories, personal recollections, and reflections

• Photographs taken at now-closed bookstores or bookstore events

• Ephemera and documents (newspaper clippings, event flyers, handbills, buttons, stickers, etc.)

• Artwork, poetry, and writing that reflects on or relates to a particular bookstore or to vanished bookstores generally

Ghost Launch welcomes submissions from those who might never have set foot in a feminist/queer bookstore (or even had the chance to). Responses to the absence of such spaces are strongly encouraged, as are fictional or fictionalized accounts and documents.

Submissions may consist of text, images, video or audio files, or links to hosted media (YouTube, SoundCloud, etc.) and can be uploaded using the online form at Ghost Launch. Submissions may also be emailed as attachments or file-sharing links to ghostlaunch@gmail.com. Please indicate if you would prefer to have your submission published anonymously. Audio files can only be accepted via email at this time. Electronic submissions only.

Throughout the year, the website will also feature a variety of projects by feminist- and queer-identified artists, writers, performers, and activists. If you have a work (a book, zine, chapbook, play, performance, visual art, etc.) to “launch,” please contact Ghost Launch.

Artist workshop “Weather Structures: Printed Sculptures, Environmental Traces”: Saturday, January 11 & Sunday, January 12, 12:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Martha Street Studio

In this solo exhibition, former Winnipegger Patrick Mahon creates printed sculptural installations that reference the human connection to shifting environmental conditions through an investigation of built structures. Forms based on images of water towers and on pictures of built supports used in invasive practices such as coal mining interplay in abstract arrangements where structures and flows comingle. A series entitled Water & Tower Allegory involves printed sculptures that extend Mahon’s longstanding commitment to intersections between art and design, decoration and expression, and the singular with the multiple. In a work made especially for Gallery 1C03, Water Memory Table, historical maps and written records that refer to the flooding of the Red River combine to produce a permeable structure that evokes a layered history of people and water in the Southern Manitoba region.

Patrick Mahon is an artist, writer, and teacher/academic; he was Chair of Visual Arts at the University of Western Ontario from 2000 - 2010. He has a BFA from the University of Manitoba School of Art and a MFA from the University of British Columbia. His work as a visual artist includes print-based projects that engage with historical and contemporary aspects of printmaking. It also involves responding to gallery and museum collections as well as establishing community-based art initiatives, including several regarding the environment. Mahon’s artwork has been exhibited widely, both nationally and internationally. In Canada he has shown at Museum London, The Hamilton Art Gallery, the Southern Alberta Art Gallery and Kamloops Art Gallery, to name a few. Internationally his work has been presented at the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in Chongqing, China in 2005 and in Barthète (Toulouse), France in 2011. Mahon’s collaborative SSHRC project on the theme of water, Immersion Emergencies and Possible Worlds, began in 2010 and included a residency at the Banff Centre in 2013. As an individual artist he was in residence at the Frans Masereel Centrum in Belgium and at La Maison Patrimoniale Barthète in France, both in 2011. He lives in London, Ontario.

RE: BUILD THEM is a solo exhibition of new paintings, sculptural maquettes and video by Winnipeg artist Ian August that reflects upon the effects of the Bauhaus movement through a (re)imagining of its (would be) spaces and structures.

Conceptually, August is interested in how modernist theory and its real life manifestations as built structures arose at the Bauhaus School. August notes that many Bauhaus architecture and design students were taught by abstract painters and he is keen to align that fact with his own practice:  “An abstraction happens at every stage [of my process] and I am eager to take concrete [modernist] structures that were rooted in Abstract painting theory and translate them back into painting.” Importantly, through his recreation of spaces from the past, August exposes the imperfections or incongruities of his subjects, thereby subverting the modernist agenda as well as the impulse to idealization.

Ian August has presented his art in exhibitions across Canada for the last decade, including local group shows Supernovas (Winnipeg Art Gallery, 2006), 26/Two-Sicks/Too-Six… (Gallery 1.1.1., 2006) and All of a Sudden… (PLATFORM centre for photographic + digital arts, 2013). He has been awarded grants for his work from the Winnipeg Arts Council, Manitoba Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. August received his Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) Degree from the University of Manitoba School of Art in 2004. In 2011 he completed his Master of Fine Arts Degree at York University in Toronto where he mounted the solo thesis exhibition Quarter Past Eleven. The following year August spent several months in Berlin and the rest of Germany researching the Bauhaus school and the dissemination of its ideas to North America. This project resulted in a series of paintings and drawings shown at Golden City Fine Art in Winnipeg (2012) and in the current exhibit RE: BUILD THEM.

The film “Bauhaus: The Face of the Twentieth Century” (ArtHaus MUSIK, 1994) will be screened in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall on November 18 at 4:00 p.m. followed by discussion with the artist and art historian Dr. Oliver Botar.

Thanks to Work Study Program of The University of Winnipeg's Awards and Financial Aid Office, Gallery 1C03 and the Art Curator Department at The University of Winnipeg are accepting applicants to fill the following two positions:

POSITION #1:

**Collections Management Assistant**

Classification: Assistant Technician 1, Step 1
Pay Rate: $12.99 / hour + 6% vacation pay
Funds Granted: $1000.00

Duties:

- conducting research on individual artists and artworks featured in the collection
- updating information in the electronic database (i.e. research findings, artwork locations, condition reports, insurance and appraisal records, loan information, digital image records, etc.)
-fulfilling on-campus artwork loan requests
- moving and assisting in the installation of artworks
- preparing identification labels
- photographing artworks and editing digital images
- maintaining the art storage facility and carefully cleaning artworks
- student may also be asked to assist with research, public/educational programming, and/or installation pertaining to Gallery 1C03 and other exhibit spaces on campus.

This work/study position offers an excellent opportunity for any student interested in gallery or museum work from a curatorial and collections management standpoint. Individuals interested in research and archives, more generally, will find this experience beneficial to future work in a related field as well.

Required Qualifications:

Preference will be given to students with a background in art or cultural studies, such as art history or anthropology majors or students in the graduate-level curatorial studies program, as well as students with previous work experience in a gallery or museum setting. Good research, writing and computer skills are required. Attention to detail is key, as are organizational skills and the ability to work independently. The ability to move and handle art is also an important consideration; training on careful handling techniques will be provided. Photography experience would also be an asset. Students from other disciplines will be considered.

-assist in coordinating and delivering public programming
-contribute to marketing and communication efforts by writing draft press releases and posting information on-line via Gallery 1C03's website, blog, facebook and twitter accounts
-student may be asked to photograph artworks and programming events
-curatorial research assistance opportunities may be available to explore future art programming on campus
-may assist with installation of Gallery 1C03 and other exhibit spaces on campus
-may assist with preparation of grant applications for exhibitions
-there will be an opportunity to develop art education programs related to Gallery 1C03 exhibitions for school age children

This work/study position offers an excellent opportunity for a student interested in gallery or museum work from a programming, communications and educational standpoint.

Required Qualifications:

Preference will be given to students with a background in art, communications and/or education, ideally art history majors, communications or education students or students in the graduate-level curatorial studies program, as well as students with previous work experience in a gallery or museum setting. Strong research, writing, oral communication and computer skills are assets, as are presentation and organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently. Photography experience would also be an asset as well. Students from other disciplines will be considered.
