Patrick Mahon: Water Structures book launch at McNally

Gallery 1C03 is pleased to partner with McNally Robinson Booksellers to launch the publication Patrick Mahon - Water Structures: Printed Sculptural Works, 2012-2014. The launch will take place at the McNally Robinson Grant Park location in Winnipeg (1120 Grant Avenue) in their Atrium on Friday, May 2 at 7:00 p.m. It will include a discussion about Mahon's work between the artist and Robert Enright.

Water Structures considers recent work produced by Mahon which was featured in three recent exhibitions at Gallery 1C03, Robert Langen Gallery, and McMaster Museum of Art. For more information about the book, the artist, and the contributors to the volume please visit Gallery 1C03's website.

The film Bauhaus: The Face of the Twentieth Century (ArtHaus MUSIK, 1994) is presented in conjunction with Ian August’s current Gallery 1C03 exhibition RE: BUILD THEM which reflects upon the effects of the Bauhaus movement through a (re)imagining of its (would be) spaces and structures.

This stunning program looks at the development of the Bauhaus and at the key figures involved in it-including the founder Walter Gropius, his successor Mies van der Rohe, Lazlo Moholy-Nagy and Josef Albers. The program also sets the history of the Bauhaus in the context of the political unrest and economic chaos of the Weimar Republic in Germany. The program features numerous experts including Christopher Frayling of the Royal College of Art, architectural historian Charles Jencks, and Dr. Peter Hahn, Director of the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin. Former students discuss their time at the Bauhaus, and the eminent architect Philip Johnson tells how it influenced his work. The Program contains rare archival footage of the Bauhaus at Dessau and looks at the architecture of Chicago, much influenced by Mies van der Rohe, who emigrated there after the Bauhaus was shut down by the Nazis in 1933. Winnipeg-based artist Ian August has presented his art in exhibitions across Canada for the last decade, including local group shows Supernovas (Winnipeg Art Gallery, 2006), 26/Two-Sicks/Too-Six… (Gallery 1.1.1., 2006) and All of a Sudden… (PLATFORM centre for photographic + digital arts, 2013). He has been awarded grants for his work from the Winnipeg Arts Council, Manitoba Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. August received his Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) Degree from the University of Manitoba School of Art in 2004. In 2011 he completed his Master of Fine Arts Degree at York University in Toronto. The following year August spent several months in Berlin and the rest of Germany researching the Bauhaus school and the dissemination of its ideas to North America. This project resulted in a series of paintings and drawings shown at Golden City Fine Art in Winnipeg (2012) and in the current exhibit RE: BUILD THEM.

Art historian Dr. Oliver Botar completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in urban geography at the University of Alberta in Edmonton; and a Master of Science in urban and regional planning, a Master of Arts in art history, and a Ph.D. in art history, all at the University of Toronto. He has taught art and architectural history at several Canadian universities. Since 1996 he has been professor of modern art history at the University of Manitoba, where he teaches a world survey of art and architecture, modern and contemporary art, post-war Canadian art, and art in new media. His research, writing and exhibition curating have focussed on early to mid 20^th century art, architecture, photography and media art. This work has been international in scope, with concentrations on Weimar Germany, Hungary, Canada and the United States. The art and ideas of Bauhausler László Moholy-Nagy have been a focus throughout his career. He has lectured, published, and has curated exhibitions in Canada, the United States and Europe. He lives and works in Winnipeg.

RE: BUILD THEM is a solo exhibition of new paintings, sculptural maquettes and video by Winnipeg artist Ian August that reflects upon the effects of the Bauhaus movement through a (re)imagining of its (would be) spaces and structures.

Conceptually, August is interested in how modernist theory and its real life manifestations as built structures arose at the Bauhaus School. August notes that many Bauhaus architecture and design students were taught by abstract painters and he is keen to align that fact with his own practice:  “An abstraction happens at every stage [of my process] and I am eager to take concrete [modernist] structures that were rooted in Abstract painting theory and translate them back into painting.” Importantly, through his recreation of spaces from the past, August exposes the imperfections or incongruities of his subjects, thereby subverting the modernist agenda as well as the impulse to idealization.

The film “Bauhaus: The Face of the Twentieth Century” (ArtHaus MUSIK, 1994) will be screened in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall on November 18 at 4:00 p.m. followed by discussion with the artist and art historian Dr. Oliver Botar.

Then at 12:30 p.m. in Eckhardt-Gramatte Hall there is a debate between Sir Kenneth Robinson and UWinnipeg Dean of Arts Dr. Glenn Moulaison about creativity and the school system. 

At 2:00 p.m. you can drop by the University of Winnipeg Archives on the 5th floor of the campus library to attend the opening reception of fabulous exhibits organized by the Archives, United Church Archives and Anthropology Museum. 

Or you can attend a panel discussion on campus architecture in the Richardson College for the Environment starting at 2:30 p.m.

Artsfest 2013!

We here at Gallery 1C03 hope you had a lovely summer. We are back on-line and excited to promote a campus-wide event that launches in 4 weeks: Artsfest 2013 - UWinnipeg Cultural Treasures!

What is Artsfest you might ask? It's a celebration of The University of Winnipeg’s fascinating art, anthropology and archives collections! Artsfest opens with a gala event on the evening of September 27 co-hosted by Len Cariou and Wanda Koop. The festival features multiple exhibitions, including Gallery 1C03’s presentation of the exhibition Boys Club. Exhibitions will be complemented by musical and theatrical performances from The Downtown Jazz Band, Virtuosi Concerts and Theatre Projects Manitoba as well as the University of Winnipeg Student Association’s Freestyle Hip-Hop Festival.

Join Gallery 1C03 at McNally Robinson Grant Park tomorrow night at 7:00 p.m. for the launch of Storytime. Above is the front cover of the publication. It doesn't give much away so you'll have to drop by to see the goods in person, not to mention take in a performative reading by "Uncle Glennie" himself. See you there!

Gallery 1C03 is pleased to partner with McNally Robinson Booksellers to launch our newest publication Storytime: Glen Johnson and Leslie Supnet. The launch will take place at McNally Robinson Grant Park location on June 20 at 7:00 p.m. It will include a performative reading by Johnson.

This handsomely illustrated 60 page publication documents the works created by writer/performance artist Johnson and visual artist/animator Supnet for their Storytime exhibition at Gallery 1C03 last fall. It features Johnson and Supnet's paired stories and drawings that replicate children's-style books but with a subtly adult tone. Storytime also includes a critical essay by Tom Kohut which employs Gertrude Stein's unit of composition to consider the unexpected trajectories of Johnson and Supnet's work.

We are looking forward to the Female Impersonators : Women Performing Women event this WEDNESDAY, March 13 @ 7:00 pm in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall at the University of Winnipeg.

The evening will include videos by Sharon Alward, Rebecca Belmore, Wendy Geller, Christine Kirouac, Divya Mehra, Freya Bjorg Olafson ,Victoria Prince, Nicole Shimonek, Lori Weidenhammer and Donna Lewis.

There will also be a panel discussion on feminist video and performance art with Sharon Alward, J.J. Kegan McFadden and Divya Mehra after the viewings.

As a bonus, Gallery 1C03 will be open prior to the event from 6:00 - 7:00 pm giving you the opportunity to also check out the Herstory exhibition.

Gallery Opening Today - HERSTORY

We are looking forward to today's opening of  HERSTORY: Art by Women in The University of Winnipeg Collection today from 4:00 - 6:00 pm at Gallery 1C03. 

We are also launching publications by Chris Reid and Dominique Rey.

Herstory is curated by graduate student Laura White as part of The University of Winnipeg's Master of Cultural Studies, Curatorial Practices program.

There will be a remarks by Pat Bovey and MLA Sharon Blady at 4:30. Cash bar and free nosh will be available. All are welcome!

Female Impersonators: Women Performing Women

Gallery 1C03 at The University of Winnipeg in partnership with the Institute for Women's and Gender Studies (IWGS) are pleased to present a special program of videos by Manitoba women artists. 

Organized in conjunction with International Women's Day celebrations and as a complement to Gallery 1C03's Herstory exhibition. Female Impersonators: Women Performing Women has been curated by internationally renowned performance artists Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan and will be followed by a panel discussion on feminist video and performance art with Sharon Alward, J.J. Kegan McFadden and Divya Mehra. The program and panel will take place on Wednesday, March 13 at 7:00 pm in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall at The University of Winnipeg. Come to watch the videos and then take part in the discussion with local feminist artists/cultural producers. 

Dempsey and Millan write: "Although camp has traditionally been the territory of gay men, it has long been employed by feminist performance artists as a means to critique gender and other culturally held absurdities through exaggeration, queens who clothe themselves in a heightened idea of womanhood, feminist artists have long laid bare the absurd rules of gender through its impersonation".

The videos in this single channel program of Manitoba works span twenty years from the late 1980's to the late 2000s. Each one peels back the surface of identity with intelligent humour. They mercilessly critique the overt and insidious impacts of patriarchy, bending assumptions about gender, orientation, history, sexuality, race and ethnicity along the way. In doing so, they insist on new readings of what it is to identify as female, broadening the definition to encompass a multiplicity of experience. Many express the most unladylike emotion - rage- and through its articulation urgently insist on social change. 

Female Impersonators: Women Performing Women will include videos by Sharon Alward, Rebecca Belmore, Wendy Geller, Christine Kirouac, Divya Mehra, Freya Bjorg Olafson, Victoria Prince, Nicole Shimonek, Lori Weidenhammer and Donna Lewis. 

This event is FREE, open to all and will take place in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, located on the third floor of Centennial Hall at The University of Winnipeg. Gallery 1C03's Herstory exhibition will be open for viewing from 6:00 - 7:00 pm on March 13 for those wishing to view it prior to the 7:00 pm start of Female Impersonators. Cinema Politica & Grass Routes presents Bottled Life

Together as part of the international documentary screening network Cinema Politica, Gallery 1C03 and the University of Winnipeg  Students' Association (UWSA), in partnership with the Grass Routes Sustainability Festival, present the film Bottled Life - The Truth About Nestlé's Business With Water at Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall on Wednesday, March 6 at 2:30 pm.

Directed by Urs Schnell (CH-US, 2012) , Bottled Life investigates Nestlé's destructive business practices concerning water commodification.

Do you know how to turn ordinary water into a billion-dollar business? In Switzerland there's a company which has developed the art to perfection - Nestlé. This company dominates the global business in bottled water.

Swiss journalist Res Gehringer has investigated this money-making phenomena. Nestlé refused to cooperate on the pretext  that it was "the wrong film at the wrong time". So Gehringer went on a journey of exploration, researching the story in the USA, Nigeria and Pakistan. His journey into the world of bottled water reveals the schemes and strategies of the most powerful food and beverage company on our planet.

Bottled Life is also presented as part of Cinema Politica's network-wide "Back the Tap" campaign and Bottled Water Free Day.

All screenings will be open to all audiences - everyone is welcome. Admission is free, but donations to offset the costs of screening the film are welcome.
