Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People
Sut Jhally / USA / 2006 / 60 min
This groundbreaking documentary dissects a slanderous aspect of cinematic history that has run virtually unchallenged form the earliest days of silent film to today's biggest Hollywood blockbusters. Featuring acclaimed author Dr. Jack Shaheen, the film explores a long line of degrading images of Arabs--from Bedouin bandits and submissive maidens to sinister sheikhs and gun-wielding "terrorists"--along the way offering devastating insights into the origin of these stereotypic images, their development at key points in US history, and why they matter so much today.
Shaheen shows how the persistence of these images over time has served to naturalize prejudicial attitudes toward Arabs and Arab culture, in the process reinforcing a narrow view of individual Arabs and the effects of specific US domestic and international policies on their lives. By inspiring critical thinking about the social, political, and basic human consequences of leaving these Hollywood caricatures unexamined, the film challenges viewers to recognize the urgent need for counter-narratives that do justice to the diversity and humanity of Arab people and the reality and richness of Arab history and culture.
Reel Bad Arabs was selected for screening by The University of Winnipeg Muslim Students Association. Discussion following the film will be facilitated by Shahina Siddiqui, Executive Director of Islamic Social Services.

TONIGHT -- Cinema Politica: Water on the Table
Together as part of the international documentary screening network Cinema Politica, Gallery 1C03 and The University of Winnipeg Students’ Association (UWSA) are pleased to present the film Water on the Table at Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall (Third Floor, University of Winnipeg) on Thursday, March 10 at 7 p.m.
Water on the Table
Is water a commercial good like running shoes or Coca-Cola? Or, is water a human right like air?
Liz Marshall / Canada / 2010 / 79 minutes
Water On The Table is a character-driven, social-issue documentary by Liz Marshall that explores Canada’s relationship to its fresh water, arguably its most precious natural resource. The film asks the question: is water a commercial good like running shoes or Coca-Cola? Or, is water a human right like air?
Water On The Table features Maude Barlow, who is considered an “international water-warrior” for her crusade to have water declared a human right. ”Water must be declared a public trust and a human right that belongs to the people, the ecosystem and the future, and preserved for all time and practice in law. Clean water must be delivered as a public service, not a profitable commodity.”
The film intimately captures the public face of Maude Barlow as well as the unscripted woman behind the scenes. The camera shadows her life on the road in Canada and the United States over the course of a year as she leads an unrelenting schedule. From 2008 – 2009 Barlow served as the U.N. Senior Advisor on Water to Father Miguel d’Escoto Brockmann, President of the 63rd Session of the United Nations.
In conjunction with Bottled Water Free Day that takes place on March 10, 2011, Cinema Politica at The University of Winnipeg invites students, faculty, staff, and community to a free screening of Water on the Table. The evening will include a special video message to the campus and community from Maude Barlowe. Discussion following the film will be moderated by, Dr. Mary LeMaitre, Winnipeg Water Watch Chair.
All are welcome to this free event! Donations will be accepted in order to facilitate future Cinema Politica events at The University of Winnipeg.
