Creative Responses to Sovereign Intimacies Exhibition

Gallery 1C03 is pleased to announce a series of creative responses to the Sovereign Intimacies exhibition that we presented in partnership with Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art and with support from Video Pool Media Arts Centre. The exhibition was curated by Nasrin Himada and Jennifer Smith and was shown at Plug In's gallery space and online from September 26 - December 20, 2020.

Sovereign Intimacies explores themes of cultural and community exchange between Indigenous artists and artists from the diaspora, more specifically artists who are First Nations, Inuit and Métis collaborating with artists living in what is currently called Canada who came to this land and are not part of the settler/colonial history of the country. The group show consists of pairings of artists, as well as, individuals whose work is based on process and relationship building, and for those whose work is invested in active conceptualization around topics of friendship and intimacy, who are working to build collective vision of a sovereign future. Featured artists included Hassaan Ashraf, Annie Beach, Ayumi Goto, iris yirei hu, melannie monoceros, Peter Morin, Mariana Muñoz Gomez, Wanda Nanibush, Meghann O’Brien, M. NourbeSe Philip, Marie-Anne Redhead, Cheyenne Thomas and David Thomas.

In response to the exhibition, Gallery 1C03's staff put together a digital education program for the exhibition which is designed for teachers, homeschooling parents and community group leaders to deliver to students and youth. The program includes images and descriptions of artworks in the exhibition, lesson plans and ideas for creative responses.

Inspired by their engagement with the exhibition and through developing the education program, the Gallery's student assistants have made their own personal creative responses to the exhibition as well. Over the coming days and weeks, we will share their responses on this blog and through our Instagram feed. Stay tuned!

Gallery 1C03 continues to offer FREE art education programming for school and community groups! We are presently offering a one hour program that includes a tour of Ian August's exhibition RE: BUILD THEM, followed by discussion and an art activity. 

Students will look at the paintings, watch the airport video and peek through the peep hole at the Factory model in RE: BUILD THEM. Then, Gallery 1C03's volunteer art educators will engage children in a discussion about the Bauhaus utopian vision of wanting designers, craftspeople and artists to work together to create buildings that fulfill the needs of modern society. We will talk about what makes a building a great place to live/work/learn in today.

The activity portion of the program will see the students use reclaimed materials to create models of their own ideal structures. Students will be given designated roles in their creations which echo the Bauhaus idea of collaboration. After the activity the groups will meet and briefly discuss their creations with one another. Through this activity students will gain insight into the importance of collaboration in the creative process.

In the past Gallery 1C03 has welcomed students in grades 1 - 12 from schools across Winnipeg and even in other parts of the province. We have also hosted visits from Art City, Girl Guide troupes and the UWSA daycare. We would welcome a visit from you and your students!

Herstory visits from John M King & Isaac Newton Schools

Gallery 1C03 was pleased to welcome students from John M. King and Isaac Newton Schools to tours of the Herstory exhibit. We are keeping the show open for group tours by appointment only until the middle of May. Did you know that Gallery 1C03 offers FREE art education programming for school and community groups? We are presently offering a one hour program that includes a tour of the Herstory exhibition of Manitoba women artists, followed by discussion and an art activity. 

Gallery 1C03's volunteer art educator Sylvia Dueck will engage children in a discussion of the various media used by the artists (including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and mixed media) as well as the subjects they have chosen to depict (urban and rural landscapes, portraiture and the body). Discussion may also include basic aspects of composition: colour, line, perspective, etc. For older students conversation can include consideration of how certain themes or media might be favoured by women artists in particular and how there may be differences in approaches over time.

The activity portion of the program will include a drawing exercise related to two of the exhibition’s themes: landscape and portraiture. When students have completed their drawings, the group will come together to talk about the important elements in the creation of their compositions. Through this exercise, the students will gain a basic knowledge of media and subjects used by the artists in the exhibition and some insight into the basic concepts of an artwork.

In the past Gallery 1C03 has welcomed students in grades 1 - 12 from schools across Winnipeg and even in other parts of the province. We have also hosted visits from Art City, Girl Guide troupes and the UWSA daycare. We would welcome a visit from you and your students!

Art Education Outreach at Gallery 1C03

Thanks to all of the students and teachers from Sister MacNamara School for coming to visit us at Gallery 1C03 this week! The students were led through an art education program for our current exhibition -- Jane Tingley's Plant (iPod) Installation -- by Gallery 1C03 volunteer art educators Ahlam Al-Khateeb, Sylvia Dueck, Victoria Nikkel and Sheila Soulsby. School visits to see art at UofW

Gallery 1C03 had a great visit yesterday from a cool group of grade 8 art students from Shaughnessy Park School! They got a last-chance look at Chris Reid's exhibition I like to believe I am telling the truth  before it gets packed up on Friday. Plus they toured the Anthropology Museum on campus and our New Iconographies show in the University Archives.

Gallery 1C03 looking for art educators

Gallery 1C03 at The University of Winnipeg is excited about what it does and wants to offer others opportunities to join in. We are presently looking for 1 or 2 people to join our team of volunteer art educators!

• Are you creative and energetic?
• Are you interested in gaining valuable experience that will stand out on your resume?

Gallery 1C03 seeks students to plan and deliver art education workshops during the 2011-12 academic season. Workshops will consist of presenting information about Gallery 1C03 art exhibits to school aged children (grades 1 - 12) and facilitating creative responses to the exhibits. Each workshop is approximately 1 hour in duration.

Gallery 1C03 and the University of Winnipeg Students' Association to screen Exit Through the Gift Shop with Panel Discussion to Follow

Together as part of the international documentary screening network Cinema Politica, Gallery 1C03 and the University of Winnipeg Students' Association (UWSA) will present the film Exit Through the Gift Shop in Room 2M70 on Thursday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m.

Directed by internationally-renowned street artist Banksy, Exit Through the Gift Shop (UK, 2010) is presented in conjunction with Freestyle V, a week long festival organized by the UWSA where inner city youth, community members and students are invited to learn and create in a highly structured (and artistically driven) programming environment at The University of Winnipeg.
From the film's website:

"This is the inside story of Street Art - a brutal and revealing account of what happens when fame, money and vandalism collide. Exit Through the Gift Shop follows an eccentric shop-keeper turned amateur film-maker as he attempts to capture many of the world's most infamous vandals on camera, only to have a British stencil artist named Banksy turn the camcorder back on its owner with wildly unexpected results."

"One of the most provocative films about art ever made, Exit Through the Gift Shop is a fascinating study of low-level criminality, comradeship and incompetence. By turns shocking, hilarious and absurd, this is an enthralling modern-day fairy-tale... with bolt cutters."

Shaughnessy Park School visit

On Thursday, September 30 Sashira Gafic brought a great group of grade 7 & 8 students from Shaughnessy Park School to Gallery 1C03 for a tour and drawing exercise related to the Dominique Rey: Pilgrims exhibition. The students produced some very freaky drawings, a few samples which you can see above. More images can be found at the album we created on Facebook.

Children of the Earth School visit

A few days ago, we received a visit from the grade 11 art class at Children of the Earth School. Our volunteer art educator extraordinaire Tracy Woodward developed a program for the Pilgrims exhibition and led the group through it. As you can see, the activity involved a drawing exercise where the students were encouraged to re-interpret works in the exhibition and also create self-portraits that included a "freakish" element. Art Education and The Pinky Show @ Gallery 1C03

On November 9th and 11th 2009, the Art Club from R.B.Russell school and a class from Children of the Earth school visited Gallery 1C03 to take in our current exhibit, "The Pinky Show: Class Treason Stories (excerpts)." Special thanks to teachers Stacey Abramson, Pancho Puelles, and Moraina MacDonald.

After watching the newest Pinky Show video installation in the gallery, the students went on to check out the Pinky banners and other Pinky vids on the computers. We had some very insightful discussions about the ways that art can communicate with us, and allow us to communicate with others. The students then proceeded to make mini-zines, partially inspired by The Pinky Show's evocative combination of text and visual material, as well as their arresting juxtaposition of cartoon kitties with serious political engagement. One student aptly described Pinky's method as "an innocent slap to the face." We were very impressed by the students' engagement and dexterity with The Pinky Show's concepts and artistic strategies.

Art Education @ Gallery 1C03!

During the month of October, three art classes from Ecole River Heights School visited Gallery 1C03 to take in Ken Gregory's fantastic exhibition "wind coil sound flow". 

After learning about Gregory's artwork, which was partly inspired by the Aeolian kite, the students went on to make their own kites out of humble recycled materials. They proceeded to take the kites for a test run on the front lawn of the University of Winnipeg....great fun! Special thanks to Amber Schellenberg, Gallery 1C03's art educator, for conducting this program.

Gallery 1C03 has been busy with some outreach programming lately.
For the past 3 Wednesday mornings, our Art Educator Amber Schellenberg has led grade 7 art classes from École River Heights School in tours related to "wind coil sound flow". After a discussion of Ken's piece, the students proceeded to reuse discarded plastic bags and turn them into working kites which they then flew on the front lawn of The University of Winnipeg. We're hoping to post some pictures of this program soon!
