Video & audio from previous public programs now on-line!

Triple Abzurbs Threat performance, September of 2010.

We're going to wrap up 2013 with some video and audio files from previous Gallery 1C03 programs. Back in September of 2010, the Gallery featured a solo exhibition called Pilgrims featuring paintings by Dominique Rey. To accompany the exhibition Dominique and her friends from Triple Abzurbs Threat carried out a live(ly) performance on the front lawn of The University of Winnipeg. Highlights from that performance, wherein they called for the public to try out to be part of their troupe, can be found here.

(Re)presenting Masculinities panelists Kegan McFadden, Bruno Cornellier & Bill Kirby, October, 2013.

More recently Gallery 1C03 organized the panel discussion (Re)presenting Masculinities to accompany the exhibition Boys Club. The panel included presentations by Dr. Bruno Cornellier, Bill Kirby and Kegan McFadden. You can now listen to these presentations here.

Free art education program at Gallery 1C03

John M. King School visit to Herstory exhibit in March of 2013

John M. King School visit to Herstory exhibit in March of 2013
Gallery 1C03 continues to offer FREE art education programming for school and community groups! We are presently offering a one hour program that includes a tour of Ian August's exhibition RE: BUILD THEM, followed by discussion and an art activity.

Students will look at the paintings, watch the airport video and peek through the peep hole at the Factory model in RE: BUILD THEM. Then, Gallery 1C03's volunteer art educators will engage children in a discussion about the Bauhaus utopian vision of wanting designers, craftspeople and artists to work together to create buildings that fulfill the needs of modern society. We will talk about what makes a building a great place to live/work/learn in today.

The activity portion of the program will see the students use reclaimed materials to create models of their own ideal structures. Students will be given designated roles in their creations which echo the Bauhaus idea of collaboration. After the activity the groups will meet and briefly discuss their creations with one another. Through this activity students will gain insight into the importance of collaboration in the creative process.
In the past Gallery 1C03 has welcomed students in grades 1 - 12 from schools across Winnipeg and even in other parts of the province. We have also hosted visits from Art City, Girl Guide troupes and the UWSA daycare. We would welcome a visit from you and your students!
If you are interested in engaging youth with some great local artists in an educational setting, contact Gallery 1C03 Director/Curator Jennifer Gibson to book a visit with your group. But don't delay: the exhibit (and tours) are only available until December 7!

Free Film Screening: Bauhaus - The Face of the 20th Century

Join Gallery 1C03 for a free screening of
Bauhaus: The Face of the Twentieth Century
November 18, 2013 at 4:00 p.m.
Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall (3rd floor of Centennial Hall) at The University of Winnipeg
Followed by Discussion with Dr. Oliver Botar and artist Ian August

The film Bauhaus: The Face of the Twentieth Century (ArtHaus MUSIK, 1994) is presented in conjunction with Ian August’s current Gallery 1C03 exhibition RE: BUILD THEM which reflects upon the effects of the Bauhaus movement through a (re)imagining of its (would be) spaces and structures.

This stunning program looks at the development of the Bauhaus and at the key figures involved in it-including the founder Walter Gropius, his successor Mies van der Rohe, Lazlo Moholy-Nagy and Josef Albers. The program also sets the history of the Bauhaus in the context of the political unrest and economic chaos of the Weimar Republic in Germany. The program features numerous experts including Christopher Frayling of the Royal College of Art, architectural historian Charles Jencks, and Dr. Peter Hahn, Director of the Bauhaus Archive in Berlin. Former students discuss their time at the Bauhaus, and the eminent architect Philip Johnson tells how it influenced his work. The Program contains rare archival footage of the Bauhaus at Dessau and looks at the architecture of Chicago, much influenced by Mies van der Rohe, who emigrated there after the Bauhaus was shut down by the Nazis in 1933. (50min, colour)

After the screening, join respected Bauhaus art historian Dr. Oliver Botar and artist Ian August in conversation!

Winnipeg-based artist Ian August has presented his art in exhibitions across Canada for the last decade, including local group shows Supernovas (Winnipeg Art Gallery, 2006), 26/Two-Sicks/Too-Six… (Gallery 1.1.1., 2006) and All of a Sudden… (PLATFORM centre for photographic + digital arts, 2013). He has been awarded grants for his work from the Winnipeg Arts Council, Manitoba Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. August received his Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) Degree from the University of Manitoba School of Art in 2004. In 2011 he completed his Master of Fine Arts Degree at York University in Toronto. The following year August spent several months in Berlin and the rest of Germany researching the Bauhaus school and the dissemination of its ideas to North America. This project resulted in a series of paintings and drawings shown at Golden City Fine Art in Winnipeg (2012) and in the current exhibit RE: BUILD THEM.

Art historian Dr. Oliver Botar completed his Bachelor of Arts degree in urban geography at the University of Alberta in Edmonton; and a Master of Science in urban and regional planning, a Master of Arts in art history, and a Ph.D. in art history, all at the University of Toronto. He has taught art and architectural history at several Canadian universities. Since 1996 he has been professor of modern art history at the University of Manitoba, where he teaches a world survey of art and architecture, modern and contemporary art, post-war Canadian art, and art in new media. His research, writing and exhibition curating have focussed on early to mid 20th century art, architecture, photography and media art. This work has been international in scope, with concentrations on Weimar Germany, Hungary, Canada and the United States. The art and ideas of Bauhausler László Moholy-Nagy have been a focus throughout his career. He has lectured, published, and has curated exhibitions in Canada, the United States and Europe. RE: BUILD THEM is a solo exhibition of new paintings, sculptural maquettes and video by Winnipeg artist Ian August that reflects upon the effects of the Bauhaus movement through a (re)imagining of its (would be) spaces and structures.

Conceptually, August is interested in how modernist theory and its real life manifestations as built structures arose at the Bauhaus School. August notes that many Bauhaus architecture and design students were taught by abstract painters and he is keen to align that fact with his own practice:  “An abstraction happens at every stage [of my process] and I am eager to take concrete [modernist] structures that were rooted in Abstract painting theory and translate them back into painting.” Importantly, through his recreation of spaces from the past, August exposes the imperfections or incongruities of his subjects, thereby subverting the modernist agenda as well as the impulse to idealization.

Ian August has presented his art in exhibitions across Canada for the last decade, including local group shows Supernovas (Winnipeg Art Gallery, 2006), 26/Two-Sicks/Too-Six… (Gallery 1.1.1., 2006) and All of a Sudden… (PLATFORM centre for photographic + digital arts, 2013). He has been awarded grants for his work from the Winnipeg Arts Council, Manitoba Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. August received his Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours) Degree from the University of Manitoba School of Art in 2004. In 2011 he completed his Master of Fine Arts Degree at York University in Toronto where he mounted the solo thesis exhibition Quarter Past Eleven.

Gallery 1C03 at The University of Winnipeg is pleased to invite you to the opening of Boys Club, a group exhibition of artworks from the University’s collection that explores representations of masculinity. Boys Club features paintings, drawings, prints and photographs by Canadian artists David Barbour, H. Eric Bergman, Kelly Clark, Ivan Eyre, E. J. (Ted) Howorth, Yousuf Karsh, Gerry Kopelow, Bill Lobchuk, Tom Lovatt, Murray McKenzie, Tony Tascona, Patrick Treacy, Linus Woods and others. Boys Club is organized as part of Artsfest 2013 – UWinnipeg Cultural Treasures, a campus wide celebration of arts and culture that runs September 27 – October 4, 2013.

With their images ranging from the 1930s to the most recent decade, several of the artists in Boys Club offer a means to consider diverse interpretations of the male figure.  Captivating portraits that show subjects singly and in groups, metaphorical personages, and collaged compositions that deal with the construction of identity via fragments of memory, history and popular culture will be on display.

The exhibition also considers the significant impact that male-centred collectives of the 1960s and 1970s have had on the local art scene and includes examples of the mid-20th century modernist aesthetic that was embraced by several prominent Manitoba male artists.

A panel discussion related to the exhibition moderated by Boys Club curator Jennifer Gibson and featuring speakers Dr. Bruno Cornellier, Bill Kirby and Kegan McFadden will take place on Friday, October 25 at 12:30 p.m. in room 2M70 (2nd floor of Manitoba Hall) at The University of Winnipeg.
