Once again Gallery 1C03 is offering a free youth art education program to students in schools and community groups. More information is below (click on picture to enlarge)!

Ghost Launch: Call for Submissions

The past twenty years have seen the near-complete disappearance of feminist- and queer-oriented bookstores in Canada, echoing the broader decline of independent, brick-and-mortar booksellers across North America. Ghost Launch is an online project that seeks to remember and reanimate these once-vital nexuses of community and culture.

Produced in conjunction with MY MONUMENT, the forthcoming exhibition at The University of Winnipeg’s Gallery 1C03 by cam bush, Steven Leyden Cochrane, Roewan Crowe, and Paul Robles, Ghost Launch is conceived of as an unstructured archive and “living monument.” The website will serve as a space to remember and reflect on vanished bookstores and as a platform for the virtual “launch” of works that continue to be made in their absence.

Ghost Launch is currently seeking submissions of personal accounts, historical ephemera, writing, and art that record, remember, or respond to feminist and queer bookstores that no longer exist.

Submissions may include (but are not restricted to) the following:

• Written and oral histories, personal recollections, and reflections

• Photographs taken at now-closed bookstores or bookstore events

• Ephemera and documents (newspaper clippings, event flyers, handbills, buttons, stickers, etc.)

• Artwork, poetry, and writing that reflects on or relates to a particular bookstore or to vanished bookstores generally

Ghost Launch welcomes submissions from those who might never have set foot in a feminist/queer bookstore (or even had the chance to). Responses to the absence of such spaces are strongly encouraged, as are fictional or fictionalized accounts and documents.

Submissions may consist of text, images, video or audio files, or links to hosted media (YouTube, SoundCloud, etc.) and can be uploaded using the online form at Ghost Launch. Submissions may also be emailed as attachments or file-sharing links to ghostlaunch@gmail.com. Please indicate if you would prefer to have your submission published anonymously. Audio files can only be accepted via email at this time. Electronic submissions only.

Throughout the year, the website will also feature a variety of projects by feminist- and queer-identified artists, writers, performers, and activists. If you have a work (a book, zine, chapbook, play, performance, visual art, etc.) to “launch,” please contact Ghost Launch.

Deadline for submissions: March 6, 2014.

Gallery 1C03 continues to offer FREE art education programming for school and community groups! We are presently offering a one hour program that includes a tour of Ian August's exhibition RE: BUILD THEM, followed by discussion and an art activity. 

Students will look at the paintings, watch the airport video and peek through the peep hole at the Factory model in RE: BUILD THEM. Then, Gallery 1C03's volunteer art educators will engage children in a discussion about the Bauhaus utopian vision of wanting designers, craftspeople and artists to work together to create buildings that fulfill the needs of modern society. We will talk about what makes a building a great place to live/work/learn in today.

The activity portion of the program will see the students use reclaimed materials to create models of their own ideal structures. Students will be given designated roles in their creations which echo the Bauhaus idea of collaboration. After the activity the groups will meet and briefly discuss their creations with one another. Through this activity students will gain insight into the importance of collaboration in the creative process.

In the past Gallery 1C03 has welcomed students in grades 1 - 12 from schools across Winnipeg and even in other parts of the province. We have also hosted visits from Art City, Girl Guide troupes and the UWSA daycare. We would welcome a visit from you and your students!

This event offers an opportunity for speakers Dr. Bruno Cornellier, Bill Kirby and Kegan McFadden to respond to various “chapters” within the exhibition and/or offer alternative means of exploring the representation of masculinities in historical and contemporary art practices.

Artsfest buzz!

Gallery 1C03 is excited to be a part of Artsfest 2013 - UWinnipeg Cultural Treasures! 


Check out all of the exciting programming that's happening on campus at this link. 

Right now there's a live art display on Spence Street as part of UWSA's Freestyle Festival. 

Then at 12:30 p.m. in Eckhardt-Gramatte Hall there is a debate between Sir Kenneth Robinson and UWinnipeg Dean of Arts Dr. Glenn Moulaison about creativity and the school system. 

At 2:00 p.m. you can drop by the University of Winnipeg Archives on the 5th floor of the campus library to attend the opening reception of fabulous exhibits organized by the Archives, United Church Archives and Anthropology Museum. 

Or you can attend a panel discussion on campus architecture in the Richardson College for the Environment starting at 2:30 p.m.

Artsfest 2013!

We here at Gallery 1C03 hope you had a lovely summer. We are back on-line and excited to promote a campus-wide event that launches in 4 weeks: Artsfest 2013 - UWinnipeg Cultural Treasures!

What is Artsfest you might ask? It's a celebration of The University of Winnipeg’s fascinating art, anthropology and archives collections! Artsfest opens with a gala event on the evening of September 27 co-hosted by Len Cariou and Wanda Koop. The festival features multiple exhibitions, including Gallery 1C03’s presentation of the exhibition Boys Club. Exhibitions will be complemented by musical and theatrical performances from The Downtown Jazz Band, Virtuosi Concerts and Theatre Projects Manitoba as well as the University of Winnipeg Student Association’s Freestyle Hip-Hop Festival.

Herstory visits from John M King & Isaac Newton Schools

Gallery 1C03 was pleased to welcome students from John M. King and Isaac Newton Schools to tours of the Herstory exhibit. We are keeping the show open for group tours by appointment only until the middle of May. Did you know that Gallery 1C03 offers FREE art education programming for school and community groups? We are presently offering a one hour program that includes a tour of the Herstory exhibition of Manitoba women artists, followed by discussion and an art activity. 

Gallery 1C03's volunteer art educator Sylvia Dueck will engage children in a discussion of the various media used by the artists (including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and mixed media) as well as the subjects they have chosen to depict (urban and rural landscapes, portraiture and the body). Discussion may also include basic aspects of composition: colour, line, perspective, etc. For older students conversation can include consideration of how certain themes or media might be favoured by women artists in particular and how there may be differences in approaches over time.

The activity portion of the program will include a drawing exercise related to two of the exhibition’s themes: landscape and portraiture. When students have completed their drawings, the group will come together to talk about the important elements in the creation of their compositions. Through this exercise, the students will gain a basic knowledge of media and subjects used by the artists in the exhibition and some insight into the basic concepts of an artwork.

In the past Gallery 1C03 has welcomed students in grades 1 - 12 from schools across Winnipeg and even in other parts of the province. We have also hosted visits from Art City, Girl Guide troupes and the UWSA daycare. We would welcome a visit from you and your students!

Gallery 1C03 is pleased to present a panel discussion in conjunction with our current exhibition Herstory: Art by Women in The University of Winnipeg Collection on Wednesday, March 27 at 12:30 p.m. in the Gallery. Join Masters in Curatorial Practices student Laura White in conversation with nationally recognized artists Dominique Rey, Eva Stubbs and Diana Thorneycroft. Cinema Politica tomorrow - United in Anger

Cinema Politica at the University of Winnipeg is presenting another film screening tomorrow, this one in cooperation with  the UWSA LGBT* Centre and Genderfest Winnipeg. We'll be showing United in Anger: A History of Act Up  at Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall on Friday, February 8th at 6:00 p.m.

Directed by veteran celebrated film maker Jim Hubbard (US, 2012), United in Anger: A History of Act Up is a unique feature-length documentary that combines startling archival footage that puts the audience on the ground with the activists and the remarkably insightful interviews from the ACT UP Oral History Project to explore ACT UP (the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) from a grassroots perspective – how a small group of men and women of all races and classes, came together to change the world and save each other’s lives.

The film takes the viewer through the planning and execution of a half dozen exhilarating major actions including Seize Control of the FDA, Stop the Church, and Day of Desperation, with a timeline of many of the other zaps and actions that forced the U.S. government and mainstream media to deal with the AIDS crisis. United in Anger reveals the group’s complex culture – meetings, affinity groups, and approaches to civil disobedience mingle with profound grief, sexiness, and the incredible energy of ACT UP.

Please join us after the film for a panel discussion and art presentation of 'Poster Virus' works. The aim of the event is to examine dominant biomedical approaches towards HIV prevention priorities, and allow for a discourse regarding ‘expert truths’ and their relation to real lived experiences of those affected by HIV.  Panelists include Jessica Whitbread (Canadian Treatment Action Council) and Gina McKay (Nine Circles Community Health Centre).

All screenings will be open to all audiences – everyone is welcome. Admission is free, but donations to offset the costs of screening the film are welcome.

Frank Shebageget coming soon & holiday greetings

Here at Gallery 1C03 we are eagerly anticipating our first exhibition of 2013: a solo show of two sculptural installations by Ottawa-based Anishinabe artist Frank Shebageget! Frank will be presenting a new iteration of Cell in the gallery (an installation view of the original work when it was shown at Carleton University Art Gallery can be seen above) as well as smaller works titled Castor's Castoreum which will be shown in one of the University of Winnipeg's Anthropology Museum window vitrines.

Opening Reception: Thursday, January 17 from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at Gallery 1C03.
Public Artist's Talk: Thursday, January 17 at 1:00 p.m. in Room 2C13 (2nd floor of Centennial Hall) at The University of Winnipeg.

Cinema Politica screening tonight - "Reel Injun"

Together as part of the international documentary screening network Cinema Politica, Gallery 1C03 and The University of Winnipeg Students’Association (UWSA) present the film Reel Injun (Canada, 2009). Directed by Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond, Reel Injun has won three Gemini Awards and a Peabody Award. It has been selected for screening by The University of Winnipeg Aboriginal Students' Council.

Synopsis:

Hollywood has made over 4000 films about Native people; over 100 years of movies defining how Indians art seen by the world.

Reel Injun takes an entertaining and insightful look at the Hollywood Indian, exploring the portrayal of North American Natives through the history of cinema.

Travelling through the heartland of America, Cree filmmaker Neil Diamond looks at how the myth of “the Injun” has influenced the world’s understanding — and misunderstanding — of Natives.

With candid interviews with directors, writers, actors and activists, including Clint Eastwood, Jim Jarmusch, Robbie Robertson, Sacheen Littlefeather, John Trudell and Russell Means, clips from hundreds of classic and recent films, including Stagecoach, Little Big Man, The Outlaw Josey Wales, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and Atanarjuat the Fast Runner, Reel Injun traces the evolution of cinema’s depiction of Native people from the silent film era to today.
