Thanks to Work Study Program of The University of Winnipeg's Awards and Financial Aid Office, Gallery 1C03 and the Art Curator Department at The University of Winnipeg are accepting applicants to fill the following two positions:

POSITION #1:

**Collections Management Assistant**

Classification: Assistant Technician 1, Step 1
Pay Rate: $12.99 / hour + 6% vacation pay
Funds Granted: $1000.00

Duties:

- conducting research on individual artists and artworks featured in the collection
- updating information in the electronic database (i.e. research findings, artwork locations, condition reports, insurance and appraisal records, loan information, digital image records, etc.)
-fulfilling on-campus artwork loan requests
- moving and assisting in the installation of artworks
- preparing identification labels
- photographing artworks and editing digital images
- maintaining the art storage facility and carefully cleaning artworks
- student may also be asked to assist with research, public/educational programming, and/or installation pertaining to Gallery 1C03 and other exhibit spaces on campus.

This work/study position offers an excellent opportunity for any student interested in gallery or museum work from a curatorial and collections management standpoint. Individuals interested in research and archives, more generally, will find this experience beneficial to future work in a related field as well.

Required Qualifications:

Preference will be given to students with a background in art or cultural studies, such as art history or anthropology majors or students in the graduate-level curatorial studies program, as well as students with previous work experience in a gallery or museum setting. Good research, writing and computer skills are required. Attention to detail is key, as are organizational skills and the ability to work independently. The ability to move and handle art is also an important consideration; training on careful handling techniques will be provided. Photography experience would also be an asset. Students from other disciplines will be considered.

POSITION #2:
**Art Programming Assistant**

Duties:

- conducting research on contemporary and/or historical artists
-communicate with artists
-assist in coordinating and delivering public programming
-contribute to marketing and communication efforts by writing draft press releases and posting information on-line via Gallery 1C03's website, blog, facebook and twitter accounts
-student may be asked to photograph artworks and programming events
-curatorial research assistance opportunities may be available to explore future art programming on campus
-may assist with installation of Gallery 1C03 and other exhibit spaces on campus
-may assist with preparation of grant applications for exhibitions
-there will be an opportunity to develop art education programs related to Gallery 1C03 exhibitions for school age children

This work/study position offers an excellent opportunity for a student interested in gallery or museum work from a programming, communications and educational standpoint.

Required Qualifications:

Preference will be given to students with a background in art, communications and/or education, ideally art history majors, communications or education students or students in the graduate-level curatorial studies program, as well as students with previous work experience in a gallery or museum setting. Strong research, writing, oral communication and computer skills are assets, as are presentation and organizational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently. Photography experience would also be an asset as well. Students from other disciplines will be considered.

Artsfest buzz!

Gallery 1C03 is excited to be a part of Artsfest 2013 - UWinnipeg Cultural Treasures!

Then at 12:30 p.m. in Eckhardt-Gramatte Hall there is a debate between Sir Kenneth Robinson and UWinnipeg Dean of Arts Dr. Glenn Moulaison about creativity and the school system. 

At 2:00 p.m. you can drop by the University of Winnipeg Archives on the 5th floor of the campus library to attend the opening reception of fabulous exhibits organized by the Archives, United Church Archives and Anthropology Museum. 

Or you can attend a panel discussion on campus architecture in the Richardson College for the Environment starting at 2:30 p.m.

Gallery 1C03 at The University of Winnipeg is pleased to invite you to the opening of Boys Club, a group exhibition of artworks from the University’s collection that explores representations of masculinity. Boys Club features paintings, drawings, prints and photographs by Canadian artists David Barbour, H. Eric Bergman, Kelly Clark, Ivan Eyre, E. J. (Ted) Howorth, Yousuf Karsh, Gerry Kopelow, Bill Lobchuk, Tom Lovatt, Murray McKenzie, Tony Tascona, Patrick Treacy, Linus Woods and others. Boys Club is organized as part of Artsfest 2013 – UWinnipeg Cultural Treasures, a campus wide celebration of arts and culture that runs September 27 – October 4, 2013.

With their images ranging from the 1930s to the most recent decade, several of the artists in Boys Club offer a means to consider diverse interpretations of the male figure.  Captivating portraits that show subjects singly and in groups, metaphorical personages, and collaged compositions that deal with the construction of identity via fragments of memory, history and popular culture will be on display.

The exhibition also considers the significant impact that male-centred collectives of the 1960s and 1970s have had on the local art scene and includes examples of the mid-20th century modernist aesthetic that was embraced by several prominent Manitoba male artists.

A panel discussion related to the exhibition moderated by Boys Club curator Jennifer Gibson and featuring speakers Dr. Bruno Cornellier, Bill Kirby and Kegan McFadden will take place on Friday, October 25 at 12:30 p.m. in room 2M70 (2nd floor of Manitoba Hall) at The University of Winnipeg.

Artsfest 2013!

We here at Gallery 1C03 hope you had a lovely summer. We are back on-line and excited to promote a campus-wide event that launches in 4 weeks: Artsfest 2013 - UWinnipeg Cultural Treasures!

What is Artsfest you might ask? It's a celebration of The University of Winnipeg’s fascinating art, anthropology and archives collections! Artsfest opens with a gala event on the evening of September 27 co-hosted by Len Cariou and Wanda Koop. The festival features multiple exhibitions, including Gallery 1C03’s presentation of the exhibition Boys Club. Exhibitions will be complemented by musical and theatrical performances from The Downtown Jazz Band, Virtuosi Concerts and Theatre Projects Manitoba as well as the University of Winnipeg Student Association’s Freestyle Hip-Hop Festival.

It doesn't give much away so you'll have to drop by to see the goods in person, not to mention take in a performative reading by "Uncle Glennie" himself. See you there!

Gallery 1C03 is pleased to partner with McNally Robinson Booksellers to launch our newest publication Storytime: Glen Johnson and Leslie Supnet. The launch will take place at McNally Robinson Grant Park location on June 20 at 7:00 p.m. It will include a performative reading by Johnson.

This handsomely illustrated 60 page publication documents the works created by writer/performance artist Johnson and visual artist/animator Supnet for their Storytime exhibition at Gallery 1C03 last fall. It features Johnson and Supnet's paired stories and drawings that replicate children's-style books but with a subtly adult tone. Storytime also includes a critical essay by Tom Kohut which employs Gertrude Stein's unit of composition to consider the unexpected trajectories of Johnson and Supnet's work.

Gallery 1C03 Now Hiring!

Gallery 1C03 is now hiring a Collections Management Intern. This is a full-time term position for a student funded with the support of Canada Heritage through Young Canada Works in Heritage Organizations.

Job Description:
The University of Winnipeg holds a collection of 1200 artworks, primarily created by Canadian artists. Of these works, about 400 are displayed throughout campus as part of a triennial rotation. The rotation ensures the longevity of the artworks while still providing public access to them. Under the direction of the University Art Curator, the Collections Management Intern will assist in implementing the rotation of 200-300 collection artworks. The Intern will help move artworks from various campus locations to a central holding area (campus art gallery), carry out condition assessments, update artwork conditions and locations in the collection database to maintain accuracy, take new on-campus artwork loan requests, assess environmental conditions in proposed new loan spaces, help move and install art in appropriate new locations, create detailed artwork identification labels to be placed beside displayed works, and complete associated paperwork (loan agreements).

The student will receive training in the following: proper art handling methods; use of the collection database FileMaker Pro (both data entry and search functions); artwork condition assessment methods and terminology; use of the Elsec environmental monitor to measure light, humidity and temperature levels; basic cleaning of framed artworks; art hanging techniques; creation of artwork identification labels.

If time allows, the student may import digital images of collection art works not already in our database and and/or conduct research on selected artists/artworks in our collection.

Qualifications:
Education: Upper level undergraduate or graduate Fine Arts or Art History student returning to studies full time in the fall of 2013.
Experience: Experience working with collections and/or information management systems and databases would be considered an asset.
Computer Skills: Experience in use of word-processing applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel. Experience with database programs such as Filemaker Pro and software such as Adobe Photoshop Light Room would be an asset.
Communication and Organizational Skills: The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, superior organizational skills and possess a strong attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy, as well as the ability to set goals and work independently.
Physical Ability: The candidate must be able to negotiate stairs and be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.

We are pleased to learn that Leslie Supnet and Glen Johnson's short animated film A Time is a Terrible Thing to Waste -- first presented in Gallery 1C03 as part of Supnet and Johnson's collaborative Storytime exhibition last fall -- will be one of 44 Canadian short films featured in Telefilm’s special curated program Not Short on Talent at the Cannes Market (Marché du Film) and at the Festival’s Short Film Corner (Cannes Court Métrage), which runs parallel to the Cannes Film Festival. Did you know that Gallery 1C03 offers FREE art education programming for school and community groups? We are presently offering a one hour program that includes a tour of the Herstory exhibition of Manitoba women artists, followed by discussion and an art activity. 

Gallery 1C03's volunteer art educator Sylvia Dueck will engage children in a discussion of the various media used by the artists (including painting, drawing, photography, printmaking and mixed media) as well as the subjects they have chosen to depict (urban and rural landscapes, portraiture and the body). Discussion may also include basic aspects of composition: colour, line, perspective, etc. For older students conversation can include consideration of how certain themes or media might be favoured by women artists in particular and how there may be differences in approaches over time.

The activity portion of the program will include a drawing exercise related to two of the exhibition’s themes: landscape and portraiture. When students have completed their drawings, the group will come together to talk about the important elements in the creation of their compositions. Through this exercise, the students will gain a basic knowledge of media and subjects used by the artists in the exhibition and some insight into the basic concepts of an artwork.

In the past Gallery 1C03 has welcomed students in grades 1 - 12 from schools across Winnipeg and even in other parts of the province. We have also hosted visits from Art City, Girl Guide troupes and the UWSA daycare. We would welcome a visit from you and your students!

We are looking forward to the Female Impersonators : Women Performing Women event this WEDNESDAY, March 13 @ 7:00 pm in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall at the University of Winnipeg.

Gallery Opening Today - HERSTORY

We are looking forward to today's opening of  HERSTORY: Art by Women in The University of Winnipeg Collection today from 4:00 - 6:00 pm at Gallery 1C03. 

We are also launching publications by Chris Reid and Dominique Rey.

Herstory is curated by graduate student Laura White as part of The University of Winnipeg's Master of Cultural Studies, Curatorial Practices program.

There will be a remarks by Pat Bovey and MLA Sharon Blady at 4:30. Cash bar and free nosh will be available. All are welcome!

Female Impersonators: Women Performing Women

Gallery 1C03 at The University of Winnipeg in partnership with the Institute for Women's and Gender Studies (IWGS) are pleased to present a special program of videos by Manitoba women artists. 

Organized in conjunction with International Women's Day celebrations and as a complement to Gallery 1C03's Herstory exhibition. Female Impersonators: Women Performing Women has been curated by internationally renowned performance artists Shawna Dempsey and Lorri Millan and will be followed by a panel discussion on feminist video and performance art with Sharon Alward, J.J. Kegan McFadden and Divya Mehra. The program and panel will take place on Wednesday, March 13 at 7:00 pm in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall at The University of Winnipeg. Come to watch the videos and then take part in the discussion with local feminist artists/cultural producers. 

Dempsey and Millan write: "Although camp has traditionally been the territory of gay men, it has long been employed by feminist performance artists as a means to critique gender and other culturally held absurdities through exaggeration, queens who clothe themselves in a heightened idea of womanhood, feminist artists have long laid bare the absurd rules of gender through its impersonation".

The videos in this single channel program of Manitoba works span twenty years from the late 1980's to the late 2000s. Each one peels back the surface of identity with intelligent humour. They mercilessly critique the overt and insidious impacts of patriarchy, bending assumptions about gender, orientation, history, sexuality, race and ethnicity along the way. In doing so, they insist on new readings of what it is to identify as female, broadening the definition to encompass a multiplicity of experience. Many express the most unladylike emotion - rage- and through its articulation urgently insist on social change. 

Female Impersonators: Women Performing Women will include videos by Sharon Alward, Rebecca Belmore, Wendy Geller, Christine Kirouac, Divya Mehra, Freya Bjorg Olafson, Victoria Prince, Nicole Shimonek, Lori Weidenhammer and Donna Lewis. 

This event is FREE, open to all and will take place in Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall, located on the third floor of Centennial Hall at The University of Winnipeg. Gallery 1C03's Herstory exhibition will be open for viewing from 6:00 - 7:00 pm on March 13 for those wishing to view it prior to the 7:00 pm start of Female Impersonators. Cinema Politica & Grass Routes presents Bottled Life

Together as part of the international documentary screening network Cinema Politica, Gallery 1C03 and the University of Winnipeg  Students' Association (UWSA), in partnership with the Grass Routes Sustainability Festival, present the film Bottled Life - The Truth About Nestlé's Business With Water at Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall on Wednesday, March 6 at 2:30 pm.

Directed by Urs Schnell (CH-US, 2012) , Bottled Life investigates Nestlé's destructive business practices concerning water commodification.

Do you know how to turn ordinary water into a billion-dollar business? In Switzerland there's a company which has developed the art to perfection - Nestlé. This company dominates the global business in bottled water.

Swiss journalist Res Gehringer has investigated this money-making phenomena. Nestlé refused to cooperate on the pretext  that it was "the wrong film at the wrong time". So Gehringer went on a journey of exploration, researching the story in the USA, Nigeria and Pakistan. His journey into the world of bottled water reveals the schemes and strategies of the most powerful food and beverage company on our planet.

Bottled Life is also presented as part of Cinema Politica's network-wide "Back the Tap" campaign and Bottled Water Free Day.

All screenings will be open to all audiences - everyone is welcome. Admission is free, but donations to offset the costs of screening the film are welcome.

In conjunction with International Women's Month celebrations, Gallery 1C03 at The University of Winnipeg is pleased to present Herstory, a group exhibition featuring work by twenty-one Manitoba women artists represented in the University's collection.

Herstory is the first time in the collection's history that art created solely by significant female artists is being shown in the gallery. The exhibition and its related forthcoming publication trace the contributions these women -- all who, at one point or another, have called Manitoba home -- have made on the local, national and international art scenes. Herstory highlights the themes and subjects these artists have examined in their work, from portraiture and the body to landscapes and narratives, and considers how "the feminine" and feminist notions (if any) have been approached and interpreted. 

The exhibition is comprised of twenty-five two-dimensional pieces produced in various media such as painting, photography, drawing, prints and mixed media  works during the past seven decades. Artists include Eleanor Bond, Sheila Butler, Caroline Dukes, Aganetha Dyck, G.N Louise Jonasson, Wanda Koop, Rosemary Kowalsky, Alison Newton, Daphne Odjig, Dominique Rey, Sheila Spence, Eva Stubbs and Diana Thorneycroft, among others. 

To complement the exhibition's opening reception on March 7, Gallery 1C03 is pleased to launch two of its latest publications which highlight the work of Manitoba women artists Dominique Rey and Chris Reid. 

A panel discussion related to the exhibition with Herstory curator Laura White and artists Dominique Rey, Eva Stubbs and Diana Thorneycroft will take place at Gallery 1C03 on March 27 at 12:30 pm.
