Gallery 1C03 now hiring Gallery Attendants!



Gallery 1C03 now hiring part-time gallery attendants! If you know someone who might be interested, please forward this information along. Applicants must be full-time high school or University of Winnipeg students. Application deadline is September 8, 2015.

Rate of pay: $10.97 - $12.25 per hour, variable hours





RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Opens/closes Gallery 1C03 (The University of Winnipeg’s campus art gallery)  at the beginning/end of the day by turning on/shutting off all Gallery lights; plugging in/unplugging, turning on/turning off, starting up/shutting down equipment; opening/closing doors; ensuring that Security Services unlock/lock doors and de-arm/re-arm the Gallery’s alarm system.
  • Safety/security of Gallery 1C03 exhibits - ensures that artworks exhibited in Gallery 1C03 are not subject to theft or mishandling by the public during hours of operation.
  • Public relations - greets visitors to Gallery 1C03 and answers any questions that visitors have about the art exhibits to the best of their ability; refers visitors to Gallery 1C03’s Director/Curator in situations where they are unable to provide assistance.
  • Attendance record - maintains a count of the number of visitors to Gallery 1C03.
  • Alerts Gallery 1C03 Director/Curator of any problems within the Gallery environment; these can relate to temperature, humidity and lighting issues or concerns for the safety of the artwork or visitors.
  • When applicable, takes readings of environmental conditions in Gallery 1C03 using a hand-held environmental monitor or a data logger.
  • When applicable, handles sales of art exhibition catalogues; this includes maintaining a count of funds in cash box and a count of catalogues at the beginning and end of each shift and returns all cash to Gallery 1C03 Director/Curator for processing.
  • Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be a full-time student at a high school or The University of Winnipeg, preferably an art history/cultural studies major or related disciplines, or with an interest in the visual arts.
  • Some knowledge of contemporary visual art would be an asset.
  • On the job training provided.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions, procedures and regulations.
  • May require the ability to maintain records and handle cash on occasion.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with visitors who may be students, faculty, staff and the general public.
  • Ability to work day, evening and/or weekend shifts.
  • Capable of performing duties as assigned.

Spring/Summer Employment with Gallery 1C03

Overview:
Gallery 1C03 is the campus art gallery for The University of Winnipeg. Our mission is to engage diverse communities through the development and presentation of contemporary and historical art exhibitions and related programming initiatives. The Gallery is also responsible for the development, preservation, and presentation of the University's art collection of nearly 1,200 works by Canadian creators. 

Job Description:
Gallery 1C03 seeks to hire a Curatorial Assistant Intern to carry out work in several areas.

Programming: Working under the supervision of Gallery 1C03’s Director/Curator, the Intern will assist with the organization and presentation of a University of Winnipeg faculty, staff, and student exhibition. Tasks include assisting with promotion via social media and other means, assisting with exhibit installation, creating artwork labels, attending the exhibition during public hours of operation, assisting with de-installation of exhibit. The Intern will also organize and carry out a two-day, off-site, educational art workshop or other public program during the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival as part of a city-wide art gallery public program project.

Collections Management: Working under the supervision of Gallery 1C03’s Director/Curator, the Intern will conduct an inventory of selected works in the collection and carry out on-campus artwork loan requests. Through this process the intern will help the Art Curator identify and prioritize selected pieces for conservation treatment as the University’s budget allows. The Intern will also input appraisal values for those works where that information had not been entered but for which there exist paper records. If time allows, the Intern will assist in the development and distribution of exhibition and copyright release forms for selected works in the collection.

Curatorial Research: The Intern will conduct research on selected artworks in the collection identified by the Director/Curator in preparation for a forthcoming conservation and/or exhibition projects.

Art Collection Library Management: Gallery 1C03 also oversees a small library of publications on contemporary and historical Canadian art. The Intern will accession new titles into the library collection database, and participate in the distribution of the Gallery’s publications to other institutions to make them available to researchers.

This position offers the candidate the opportunity to gain valuable hands-on training and work experience in a professional environment. This position is made possible thanks to funding from the Government of Canada’s Young Canada Works Program.

Qualifications:
Education: Upper level undergraduate or graduate Fine Arts, Art History, or Cultural Studies student intending to return to studies full time in the fall of 2015.
Experience: The candidate must have experience working with the public in a courteous and diplomatic manner; familiarity with delivery of public programs would be considered an asset. A working knowledge of collections and/or information management systems and databases are desired.
Computer Skills: Proficiency in use of word-processing applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel as well as social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram are required. Experience with database programs such as Filemaker Pro, software such as Adobe Photoshop Light Room, and the email marketing program Envoke would be considered assets.
Communication, Research, and Organizational Skills: The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong research skills, superior organizational skills, and possess a strong attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy, as well as the ability to set goals and work independently.
Physical Ability:  The candidate must be able to negotiate stairs and be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
Young Canada Works (YCW) Eligibility: Students must be registered with YCW prior to being interviewed and all candidates selected must be approved by YCW to confirm their eligibility in advance of them being offered a position. New Gallery publications now available

Gallery 1C03 is pleased to announce the release of two publications related to our recent exhibitions!




Willow Rector: Trapped is a print publication featuring gorgeous illustrations of the artist's hand-embroidered tapestry and animal pelt sculptures that were presented in the Gallery last fall. The book includes a detailed and insightful essay by former Winnipeg Art Gallery Chief Curator Helen Delacretaz. It retails for $10.00.




Mark Neufeld: Re-enactments is available as a print-on-demand publication. It's Gallery 1C03's first foray into on-line publishing! The book includes lavish illustrations of the works in his show as well as performance stills. Contemporary art writer Sigrid Dahle offers a deeply creative and layered responsive text.
